The XPower Powerpack 1500 consists of a battery pack that stores electrical energy, state-of-the-art electronics that convert 12 volts from the battery pack to household power, an AC power panel that contains two standard outlets, and a DC power panel that is used to run 12 volt products. These components are packaged into a rugged "cart" with a removable waist handle that allows XPower Powerpack 1500 to be wheeled from room-to-room or outdoors over rough terrain. An excellent alternative to a generator, the XPower Powerpack produces no noise or fumes and has no moving parts. With the accessories provided, you can easily recharge the XPower Powerpack using standard utility power from your wall outlet, your vehicle, or from a solar panel. The XPower Powerpack can be used to produce power for numerous applications. For power emergencies it can run essential appliances like refrigerators, cordless/mobile phones, radios, fireplace fans, table lamps, or microwaves. For work sites, you can power your drills, belt sanders, circular saws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, vacuums, computers, large monitors, fax machines, and inkjet printers. For plain old fun, you can use the power source to run blenders, video games, TV and VCRs, satellite equipment, coffee makers, portable coolers and more. The XPower Powerpack features a built-in 1500 watt inverter and sealed, non-spillable 60 Amp-hour AGM battery. Dual AC outlets allow operation of multiple products, and a built-in battery level indicator confirms the charge level. A high surge protection and automatic over-temperature and overload shutdown keeps the Powerpack running safely and efficiently, while a low voltage alarm and shutdown prevents deep battery discharge. You can recharge the Powerpack from home (up to 15 hours), or your vehicle (6 to 8 hours). A padded grip towing handle removes easily for storage in tight places, and built-in handles on sides allow for easy lifting. The XPower Powerpack measures 14.8 x 15.6 x 12.3 inches (HxWxD), weighs 60 pounds, and is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Powers a large Karaoke machine for five+ hours By RicR2 I needed a powerful but sealed power-pack (sealed battery + converter) for poolside use, to power a large 110-volt karaoke machine for five hours a day. The Xatrex 1500 is the only power-pack I've found that meets this requirement. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the wheels have rubber rather than (noisy) plastic treads. The first 1500 stopped working with a bang after two hours. When I phoned the Xantrex company, the technician I soon was talking to quickly concluded that my 1500 had malfunctioned and recommended that I return it. I was pleased with this candor. The second 1500 has worked for about a month now. Not obvious is that the 1500 has a small storage cabinet, in which I store an extension cord. Both 1500s arrived undamaged. A disclaimer is that I bought my 1500s from costo-dot-comm, which is relevant because perhaps Costco uses different packaging for shipping. The "large karaoke machine" is a MegaStar CM-K1100, and its average draw has been 30-something watts. 9/18/06 Update: Around July the charge time dropped to under four hours. When I called Xantrex, the technician told me that battery life is about 200 charges. 101 of 103 people found the following review helpful. Good all-in-one package By A Customer The Xpower 1500 is a good backup system as it has eveything you need in a convenient handtruck (the batteries are heavy).Unfortunately the 61 Amphr batteries don't last that long. Adding a 100Ahr battery which you can easily be connected to the xPower make for a nice system which will get you thru a few days of blackout. 151 of 158 people found the following review helpful. Badly damaged once again. By BWW I previously ordered two of these units and wrote a review. Both were badly damaged, but one was salvagable. The other I had to return, after it overheated and emitted a noxious odor. I decided to take a chance and order another unit this month (goal was to have total of two working units), hoping that whatever warehouse or shipping issues that resulted in previous damage had been resolved. They weren't. This unit also came with crushed top and wheels. Until the manufacturer comes up with a better way to ship these heavy beasts, not worth it. See all 54 customer reviews...

OK for a high wattage B/U but extended times still require a genset By TL Bought this recently from Amazon for $180.00 I will say its worth about that. I tried a few high wattage things in it like a hair dryer, Iron, coffee maker, just to see how long I could use it. These are things I could never think of using in a standard 1500VA UPS, (Which I have for comp and such) All of the devices ran well, the hair dryer probably sucked it down the fastest, (Set high 1500watts), lasted aout 7 minutes before the warning started going off. The unit ran about 5 more minutes on medium setting before the battery dropped to 20 percent. The battery did recover to 50% after turning off dryer, so high wattage appliances I think are a bit much for the batteries to output continuously. The unit is heavy, about 60 pounds. For the money, I would buy again. I figure I should get about 6 hours on a computer with a flat panel attached. For most short power outages, this will get you by for a few necessities. Anything longer you will have to go generator. The description reads as though you can use it for a fridge and other high wattage appliances, which I guess is true, but misleading as I would imagine a fridge would kill it in about 10 minutes or less. All in all glad, I was able to purchase for the $180.00. If nothing else you can dry your hair when the power is out, and make coffee, without having to hook up the generator.UPDATE:So I wanted to update this review. The unit gave out after about 18-24 months. Cant tell exactly when it lost its capacity but it would last maybe 5 minutes on light load. I took the time to tear it apart and found three 12 volt 17ah SLA batteries wired in parallel. They were pretty much useless. Tried to bring them back but as most here know once an SLA battery gets near end of life it is almost impossible to get them back from the dead even with a good quality desulfator. I got lucky and found 3 new Panasonic replacements for $25ea on EBAY and installed those. (A good quality SLA battery in this range is usually about $70 bucks each). Unit is back up and running like new. I would assume most people would not attempt this nor probably should they. High risk of shock even with the unit unplugged. And many parts to disassemble/reassemble. If you do attempt, take lots of pictures as you break down and be carefull of wires. Doesnt matter how long or how many times you have handled electricity, only takes once. 27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Piece of Junk By Orientdrifter This item is a piece of junk. Mine gave up after a month, and it is not even used much, just lying in a corner being charged. What is worse, their customer service is more than a piece of junk too. They diagnosed the problem as a battery failure. Since this unit is heavy and I would have to spend over $50 to ship it, I requested that they just send me a new battery and I return the old one to them. But, no! they want the whole unit back. What happened to the customer is always right? And this item is not even worth $100, much less the stated price. For one, it wont hold a charge long, and it breaks easily. A small electric generator is a much, much better value. My advice to you, do not patronize anymore Duracell or Xantrex, their products are junk and their customer service a joke. 22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Product in search of a niche By R. H. Hardin UPDATE: After a few months sitting in the corner being charged, I tried it out today. Apparently there's at least one bad cell; a 600w load exhausts the batteries in about 45 seconds. So I revise my rating to ``piece of junk,'' niche or no niche. It needs a much better quality control on the batteries. ORIGINAL Post: Pros : about three times the run times of a comparable capacity UPS, based on battery capacity (3 x 17AH, vs typical 2 x 9AH in a 1500VA UPS). Maybe nice to have around

Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn't weigh much. I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels. These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq. We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems. There's only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how. You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I've written directly to Brunton's service department for guidance, but after a month I've only gotten the read receipts from them. No answer so far. No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare. All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don't think I'm missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other. You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this. Anyone with one panel could see what I mean. Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together. I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together. Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries. Unfortunately this isn't the case yet. The panel is excellent and I like it a lot. I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area. Brunton's customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you're buying only one. Update: I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is: "To your question... The four-pronged linking cable can make the connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn't the best, but I've got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read increased amperage. On the panels where you're forced to use both the single and multi-tipped wire, I've found it's best to turn the four-tip plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the single wire. I'll be the first to say it isn't pretty. It creates a slight fold in the panel, and doesn't allow it to sit completely flat, but it does make the connection, and since there's no solar receiver over the output, it doesn't affect the efficiency. As I said, the multi-prong cord isn't the best design. It's something I'm trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn't increase the total voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the amperage. " Update * Click on "See customer Image" underneath the main product pic to see what this looks like * So I broke out my panels and gave it a try. Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial

I have all of them in a closet waiting for an extended power outage. I purchased Radio Shack #274-1573 adapters so that I can plug them directly into my four Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 plus units (battery pack power sources). These power packs give me both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. I keep them fully charged by plugging them in to the wall socket. As for choosing solar panels, If I could afford it (and I was many years younger) I might have purchased the much more expensive monocrystalline solar panels. They retain 80% of original efficiency after twenty five years of continuous use. By contrast, these much cheaper S-1116 briefcase panels will only last about five years of continuous use. Also, the monocrystalline panels are much more efficient and thus smaller while producing higher wattage. A nice portable monocrystalline briefcase is available at much higher cost. It is even somewhat weather proof. The S-1116 is not weather proof. If you want to set up a lifetime solar power source, buy monocrystalline solar panels. But, I assume you are only wanting a portable solar power source for emergencies. If so, I think this cheaper S-1116 is your best choice. It might also be a good choice considering that they do last five years - and the scientific community is continuously improving, and reducing cost of, everything electronic. All four of my panels tested better than advertised. Maybe I should have given the S-1116 five stars. 37 of 37 people found the following review helpful. S-1116 Amorphous Briefcase Solar Performance Numbers By Michael D. Zuteck I bought this unit as a low cost way to gain some hands on experience with solar panels, and for possible use to recharge my laptop computer after a hurricane power outage. Via digital voltmeter I found: Open circuit voltage: ~ 21.5 v Max charging current: 400 - 500 ma Both the voltage and current will vary somewhat depending on temperature and insolation - these values are for shirt sleeve temperature and good sky conditions. I've used it to recharge the battery on a motorcycle that's used infrequently, and leave it on the front dash of an Astro van that is also infrequently used. It adds charge in both cases, but at a half amp tops its not a fast way to do it. The unit is reasonably well built, and the supplied hookup cables are useful. For light duty or maintenance charging, it can do the job. If you want to deliver a more robust amount of power, a monocrystaline panel will deliver a lot more juice for the same physical size, whether its briefcase or regular panel. Bottom line - if you understand its limits, this product is a good way to mess around with solar power at a modest price. But it you want to generate more serious levels of power, look at the mono or poly crystaline alternatives. See all 2 customer reviews...

By Brian Freeman Product works well but you need to check the output at the end of the cigarette lighter plug with voltmeter. I couldn't figure out why there was no power at the cig plug. After some investigating I realized there was a fuse inside the cig plug that was blown. Even though the blue light is flashing you'll still have no power at the plug. I slid the chrome ring off the plug and it opened up exposing a blown fuse. Hope this helps. 45 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Sunforce Solar Battery Maintainer By Howard W. Gaarder Hi- I bought this set-up to keep my Motorhome charged when not using it. It is only 15 watts so can barely keep the battery up to charge if I am actually using any lights or other stuff but it will keep up with the draw of the refridgerator and minimal stuff. My only beef is the controller wires could have all been pre-terminated with connectors rather than having me do that. This was bought as a kit so it would have been nice if there was a connector on the input side of the controller that mated witht he connector on teh solar panel and a different style connector on the output that would be compatible with the cigarette-lighter adapter, etc. In other words- all set up to just plug in and go. Once I soldered and shrinkwrapped the new connectors on I'm pretty happy with it. Not everyone has the ability to properly terminate the wires. Thanks 53 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Not up to snuff By board biker I purchased this combo for off grid minimal lighting needs with high hopes. Package arrived dented, but contents appeared OK. Open circuit voltage on solar panel OK at 22v. However, max power output on sunny day was 1.6w (130mA@ 12.3v). This was on a day that my conventional 2.7kW system was producing 1.8kW. My plan is to return and try again, but purchasers should definitely check output. 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Keeps my camper and truck batteries charged By Stephen D. Innovative design from China, packaging needs help By HMMWV *Update* 6-2010, while my original panels are still running strong so long as I hose them down once a month, I've noticed that the PVC pipe provided to hold them in place has become brittle with sun exposure, hence I would now in 20/20 hindsight recommend a coat of Krylon Fusion Dover White Plastic Satin Spray Paint on the PVC parts to prevent UV cracking later in life. I do not think the Krylon Fusion product was available when I first setup my first panels but UV cracking of the support structure could cause panel damage in years 2 and 3. Meanwhile Amazon got their hands on some obsolete & discontinued Sharp panels (12.5% efficiency vs the new 13.1% efficiency) - if you are serious about needing lots of solar power in a small space, this is a big kit - you can view it here: Sunforce 39126 246-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit My only concern about the kit is that due to the new panels being higher efficiency means it will be difficult to match panels if you find you still need more power later on. The other con on that system is it's price -- $1300+ but you get the wattage, along with a cheap charge controller and inverter, both of which could be upgraded for better system performance. It's just another solar system to consider in the $5/watt or less pricepoint for DIYers. Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though! Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to! This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit. The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made. When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around. (Begin original review after buying panels) I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I'd give it

Perfect for my campsite By Tab Numlock I live on a river and built a campsite on an island across from my house (the dog loves it). I bought a deep-cycle marine battery but am getting too old to lug it in and out of the canoe for charging. So I got this little panel and, so far, have not run out of juice. And it's cheap enough so if someone steals it it's no big tragedy. I run a laptop, TV, fluorescent light and charge my cell phone. I even have a 12v car-vac to clean the sand out of the tent. Of course, I'm not there 95% of the time so 5 watts is probably adequate. And I don't have to worry about overcharging. I screwed it to a big log in pretty open sun. So far, it has survived, even some small hail. BTW, I use the power cord from an old vacuum cleaner and a 4-way 12v splitter to distribute power from the battery. 53 of 54 people found the following review helpful. A nice tool for those who take long trips away By Amazon Consumer 40+ In 2006 I took a 3 week vacation out of the country. I left my car at the airport and away I went. Upon my return, I had to have the battery boosted for 15 minutes before it would turn my car's engine on. I have no idea what caused the drain (Sattelite Radio memory, car's other computers, etc), but I had to do something to prevent a $50.00 boost call in the future. A coworker told me about these devices and how his brother uses them to keep his mobile home powered when parked. Higher wattage products are sold, but if all you're doing is keeping a car battery charged, 5 watts is plenty of power for the job. No other devices (charger controllers) are needed. The charger comes with a couple of ways to hook up to the battery (direct battery terminal clips, cigarette lighter plug). I used the cigarette plug. Just plug it in to the power port, and lay the solar energy collector side face up on your dashboard. For those with heavily tinted windshields, I have no idea if the tint would cause a problem with the panel's energy collection. This year, after returning from another 3 week trip (and using the solar charger), my battery started better than it did before my trip to the airport! 96 of 103 people found the following review helpful. Good electric output but fragile / bad packaging By El Marco I recently ordered one of these panels (June 2007). The first one arrived shattered - the manufacturer packaging does not protect the panel much and it was inadequately packaged in the shipping box by Amazon. The replacement unit was also badly packaged for shipment. I tested the electrical output in full sunlight and got 20V out into a 100 ohm load -> 4 watts which is pretty good. One thing to consider though is that this product is not very rugged. The solar panel has a plastic frame but the middle is unprotected on the back (and front). So unless you handle it very carefully it is likely to break. Someone using this on a car dashboard would need some sort of protective carrier (like those insulated pizza boxes) to protect the unit when it was not being used. ------------ Update Dec 2007 ---------------- Panel stopped producing electricity in November. Had to send it in to Sunforce at my expense for warrantee replacement. They promptly tested it and sent me a replacement. One thing I did notice is that the plastic housing on the unit that I returned had developed some small cracks. I am using the unit on my car dashboard to keep my battery charged. Miller This device is nothing but a high priced gimmick that looks good in advertising, but does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IT SAYS IT DOES. The unit is hard to install, for beginners. It is too much to mess with every time you get out of your car in hot weather. If there is low sunlight, or you have the least amount of tinting on your windows, even factory shading, IT DOES NOT WORK. You must point it directly to the sun in order for it to activate the venting fan in it, and how many times is your car tipped and pointed so the unit will look directly at the sun??? 73 of 76 people found the following review helpful. waste of time and money By FAHAD ALRSHID it does not work and when it arrive i found it broken !! made from cheap materials ,and i can rate it with a half star See all 53 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 79 of 83 people found the following review helpful. Very Nice By Mark Wieczorek I placed this item in my living room in a window that gets sunlight about 6 or 7 hours a day in the winter. It really needs direct sunlight in order to spin. In fact, if it doesn't have very strong sunlight, it'll make a ticking noise as the gears click against each other. This is probably because the motor doesn't have enough electricity (from the solar panel) to move it foward, but has enough to make some of the gears move. Since it does make a noise that could bother you, if you're not a heavy sleeper, and you like to sleep after the sun has hit your windows, I wouldn't recommend this for a bedroom. The rainbows are nice and reach across the room. They really are fun to watch and move in ways you don't quite expect. I'm thinking of finding crystals with two holes in them and stringing them on this rainbow maker. The more crystals, the more rainbows right? Adding crystals would just mean unbending the wire that holds on the current crystal, and adding the new crystal in between so the one it comes with is on the bottom (as it has only one hole). The rainbow maker also works through our sheer curtains and casts fuzzy rainbows along the wall as well as tiny little rainbows on our curtain. Even when it isn't spinning, as long as it's receiving direct sunlight, it's casting rainbows around the room. It really helps you become more conscious of the passage of time and the movement of the clouds in front of the sun.In addition to the suction cup, it also has a hook for hanging on a piece of string. I bought one for my mother and she's thinking of hanging it outside in a screened in room for the cats to play with. The cats were amused by the rainbows, though if you leave it in the window all the time, it becomes less interesting after a while. After a a few days, they barely paid attention to it, but every once in a while would notice it again and start chasing the rainbows. Sometimes when it ticks the cats just become interested in the ticking thing on the window.Like any piece of art, you must pay some attention to it for it to really work it's charms, and like any piece of art it can serve to brighten up the room just by it's being there. If you have a window that gets direct sunlight, this piece of art will surely brighten up your room & mood, especially if you're around during the day. It's no substitute for going outside, but if you have to be indoors, this will help bring a little of the outdoors in.This is also a great conversation piece, provided you have your friends over during the day. One or more of these could really brighten up a public space. It also strikes me as being a good gift for baby... A self-powered mobile that uses rainbows and the power of the sun. As a simple, enjoyable, fun piece of art, it also makes a great gift. 29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Solar Chlor - Solar Powered Chlorine and Ion Generator

SolarChlor's Dual Patented process utilizes the Sun's power to transform salt (NaCL) into usable chlorine (HOCL) by means of electrolysis; powered by a non-harmful, high output solar panel. The SolarChlor unit also employs an anode that, through the patented salt dissolution process, releases charged mineral ions that actively penetrate the cell walls of algae spores and inhibits further mutation. The chlorine and mineral levels are adjustable to prevent over chlorination and ionization. The high-tech solar panel will work in cloudy weather or even in the shade! SolarChlor provides the ecological and economical means of producing Chlorine that is necessary in your pool to eradicate microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses that are not effected by the ionized minerals. The Hydrogen molecules released by the electrolytic process creates the patented convection draw effect that allows the Chlorine to concentrate prior to being dispensed from the unit. This convection effect also dispenses the Chlorine throughout the water and requires less pump circulation to be effective. SolarChlor produces Chlorine all day long and charged mineral ions 24/7. The patented mineral anode and process replaces those high dollar Nature 2 and Frog systems saving you hundreds of dollars in mineral cartridges and algaecides alone. The true benefits of SolarChlor must be experienced! SolarChlor can easily convert your pool into the economical paradise you intended it to be. Experience the Natural Sparkling Water effect that SolarChlor provides while enjoying the savings all year long!

Colonna This little device arrived in excellent condition and easy to follow instructions. You just plug something that runs on electricity into it and turn it on. It's that simple and ready for use out of the box. I can run my laptop just under four hours at night or all day with the solar panel sitting in the sun. We could take this anywhere, like camping or to the park. It's lightweight yet sturdy and well constructed. I like to keep it around the house for emergencies. It doesn't power big devices like a refrigerator but a small TV, ceramic heater, a lamp, coffee maker, anything that size works great. It also powers 12 volt items like some shop lamps and the included USB adapter via a standard cigarette lighter plug. Devices powered by 12V use less battery and do not require the in the inverter to run, increasing the run time significantly. There are many choices on the market and this was the best value. If you want a renewable portable power system this is the one to get. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
