I had a friend come by and help me hook it up; it took about 15 minutes. By Father Goose I'm not sure where the previous reviewer ran into a problem? I bought one of these Powerhubs from Amazon two years ago for our "off grid" cabin. I also purchased: 3x60 watt solar panels from a local supplier ($400); 2x100 amp-hour deep cycle batteries from Canadian Tire which are designed for this system ($400 on sale); 100 ft. of #10 wire ($100); a couple of 12" #4 jumper cables and a 20 amp charge controller ($75). The panels were installed on our roof. The wire from the panels was run down an old conduit standpipe to the basement and up through the floor to the Xantrex PH-1800 box. The included manual was very detailed and illustrated all the connection steps. There is also a very nice installation video at this site[...] The system has been up and running and powering all our table and floor lights for two years without a hitch. We keep at least 4x13 watt compact fluorescent lights on most evenings for 4 hours or more and a laptop or two and a small stereo system. No TV but what would a TV be doing at someone's cabin anyway? We've never come close to running the batteries below 80% charge and the batteries are normally recharged up to capacity before noon every day. I'm hoping to add a 400 watt wind turbine next spring which should just plug into the unit with one connection, along with two more batteries that fit into an add-on battery box made specifically for the main box. I can't imagine a simpler and more elegant solution and at a final cost of less than $1800 for everything. Myers I spent more time installing this in my motorhome than it lasted once it was installed. I bought one of these in 2008, installed it in my motorhome and spent a few days camping in the Arizona desert. The following year we didn't go camping at all, so did not use the inverter. This fall, I was getting the motorhome set up for camping and I noticed the inverter was not working correctly. It runs for about a minute and then shuts off. This happens under heavy load or no load at all. After a few phone calls to Go Power, I learned that there are no user fixes, the inverter is shot, and they offered to sell me another at 1/2 price since mine was beyond the 2 year warranty. I declined their offer, given that the first one only had about 10 hours of use on it, and there was no reason to think that another unit wouldn't do the same thing. I figure this one cost me about $75 per hour to operate, so even at half price, it isn't a deal. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is such a ripoff that I would go as far as to say that the other review for this is fake and they are just trying to see how stupid people are. By J_R_S First of all, this wind generator's output is preset to 14.1 volts (for charging batteries, you know. The preset can be adjusted from 13 to 17 volts, by the way). 14.1 volts divided into 400 watts is 28 amps, so the specs are correct as stated in the product description. Remember to always keep in mind the differences between 120 volt AC current and 12 to 14 volt DC current -- it's really important on this alternative energy stuff. Naturally, you are only going to get close to the 400-watt maximum output with a steady 28 mph wind. But the unit won't "go up in smoke" at that point as some reviewer said -- all wind turbines have built in cut-out system that prevent them from going over their rated output and being damanged. C'mon, folks... the people who make these things are not dummies. But it's true that there are not many places in the world where you get 28 mph winds blowing on a regular, continuous basis. The suggestion of other reviewers to figure on getting maybe a 15 mph average wind speed with output from the wind generator of 50 to 60 watts at 2 to 3 amps is a realistic evaluation of what most people can expect out this or any other small wind turbine on a fairly regular basis. On days when you've got more wind, you luck out and get more power is all. That's why, for most people, the first alternative power choice is amorphous solar panels (they continue to work on cloudy days and with partial shade) because you can rely on the sun on a day to day basis more than you can on having a good steady wind consistently. The manual for this product states that the blades should start turning in a 7 mph wind, which is just a good breeze. The product manual is *outstanding* by the way, the most complete I've ever seen for any product and indicates the integrity and honesty of the company who makes these units. They obviously want their customers to have success with their product. In this era of everything-is-made-in-China it's great to see a solid product that is price-competitive like this one which is actually made in the USA by Southwest Windpower Inc. of Flagstaff, Arizona. When I get around to adding some wind capability to my existing solar panel setup, this product would be a good choice because a 60-watt solar panel will run you around the same price. So you can add 60 watts of wind for about the same cost as adding 60 watts of solar -- and with a hybrid system you get to take advantage of both alternative technologies. Martinez I have this wind generator hooked up to 8 6 volt deep cycle batteries powering my 2 bedroom off grid home. we run 2 televisions dvd players and compact flourescent lights for bedrooms and kitchen without having to turn on our generator. We dont have a microwave, and our refrigerator runs on propane. But after using our loud generator for 2 months at $15.00 for gas on a daily basis, The machine will pay for itself quickly, The noise is minimal.The sounds it makes reminds me of birds chirping. Defective and Poor Quality By Economist I impulse-purchased the WDR5B locally at a closeout price of $24.95, based on the long-standing reputation of Black and Decker tools. What a disappointment! The radio was dead in dry cell mode. (My batteries were new, inserted properly, and all tested good.) The unit was live in hand-cranking mode, but the tuner was extremely poor. It was difficult to separate adjacent stations and some overlapped. The tuner had difficulty locking in a station. The sound quality was extremely poor relative to a similar-sized and priced radio. The cell phone charger adapter plugs did not include a usb plug. The flashlight worked. I called the Black and Decker phone number listed in the instructions - Call This Number Before Returning the Product. The wait was short, the rep was polite, and the recommendation to return the product to where it was purchased reinforced my decision to do so. I would neither purchase this product again, nor would I accept one for free. Great Compact Flashlight with Weather Radio By JoviFanatic We've had this product for several years and have loved it. I haven't used the cell chargers, but it did come with several. Springtime in St. Louis brings frequent thunderstorms and we have definitely gotten our money's worth out of this. It is also our main flashlight and has two different settings for brightness. It has a hand-crank as an option for charging, but we have always used batteries. It doesn't seem to eat through them. It's compact size makes this a clear choice over bulkier options. I was looking for an inexpensive pure sine wave inverter to replace my Duracell (Xantrex) modified sine wave inverter. I was expecting to have issues from the get go (due to the cheap price!) but this inverter is working out quite nicely. I have it hooked up to 4 Trojan T-105 batteries which is charged up with an 85 watt Kyocera solar panel and Xantrex C35 charge controller. Being pure sine wave, I can run anything now that my old modified sine couldn't. No more annoying buzzing sounds from CFL's or TV's. certain appliances that wouldn't power up on the old inverter now work flawlessly. Some things I run on the Sunforce: Samsung 22" LCD TV, CFL's of all sizes, Playstation 2, battery chargers, laptops, electric cooler. I haven't tripped the over current protection yet at all, not even when using items that typically surge, such as a large power drill. No fan issues like the other review mentioned.. in fact I haven't heard it come on at all yet; then again it's winter time here in Missouri so I assume it truly is thermal controlled. The remote keychain that was provided with the unit works great. Since I'm doing the electrical work on our new cabin, I can turn off and on when working on the electrical. Then turn it off when we leave for the week. The only issue I've had so far is once I came back on the weekend and the inverter turned itself back on sometime during the week. This normally wouldn't be a big issue except we're limited on battery capacity and can be a nuisance if kept happening. This has only happened the one time so no biggie. The LCD readout on the front of the inverter is a nice feature, more expensive inverters don't have this by default, though I rarely look at it. I would like to determine how much power the inverter uses when it's powered on and in idle mode. The documentation doesn't mention this anywhere and would expect that would be a major selling point. (or, disadvantage if it's too much of a power draw). I don't have an amp meter to test what it is, if you find out please post a review. The only other downsides is: 1) this inverter has no permanent mounting brackets. only rubber feet on the bottom. luckily the thick DC cabling keeps it well secured within the battery box. 2) the DC hookups are HAND TIGHTEN only. This can be an issue if you, like me, use the proper gauge wiring. in my case I'm using 6 gauge, which is actually borderline of being too small but the batteries are close by. I ended up using pliers to tighten the hand lugs. With thicker wiring, I imagine this would be a huge pain. PROS: inexpensive! I noticed the price just went up though :( LCD readout on front panel Keychain remote, I haven't seen any other inverters include this with the inverter itself CONS: no mounting brackets? Not working reliably By John C. Muir I bought the inverter to use in an RV to power lights, TV/DVD, and other light AC loads. The price on this unit is very attractive so I bought it and checked it out before installing. I tested it under light and maximum loads and even hooked it up to an oscilloscope to verify if it was really a sine wave output. The last thing I did was bring it in the house to power the TV, stereo, computer, DVD, and VHS player simultaneously. (This is still well under 1000W.) Conclusions: (1) Powers all loads I've thrown at it without a problem (except see #4# including electronics, 1000W electric heater, fluorescent and incandescent lights, and an electric drill. #2# Has a real sine wave output. #3# Causes considerable interference to AM radio when used to power the stereo system, but absolutely no interference on the TV or FM radio or

Baxter I purchased this Humless Sentinel as backup power for power outages and for the eventual major earthquake in the Palm Springs Area (I hope this one doesn't happen). What interested me was the long life lithium based battery and all the controls in one box. I had made a lead acid based battery system years before and have also read many reviews about the negative aspects of using "car/RV batteries". I wanted a clean system that would hold a charge for a very long time and really be ready when the need arises. It's a 50 amp hour system so it is not designed to make up for the loss of power to major appliances, but it runs lap top computers, small TVs, LED/CFL lighting, fans and basic necessities quite well (up to 1000 watts continuous). This product, although pricey, is well built and performs as described. I also purchased two 90 watt solar panels and some cabling from Humless directly (from their web site at Humless.com), that allow the system to recharge during longer power outages. The panels fully charge the Sentinel in about 4 hours, and are plug and play - meaning the twist-on connectors hooked up in seconds without any hassles at all. This means I can use the device during the day and still have some power for the evening hours. I still have the portability and it stores in a small closet space with the solar cables running up to my roof. The Humless team in Utah was very helpful answering questions during a few telephone calls to verify that coupling the Sentinel to their solar panels along with my "install skills" would get the job successfully done. Now it may be worth it to you to have them give it to you all at once and do the integration but you can do it cheaper yourself. It was packaged well, took a little while to get here but was within reason. The responses to my e-mails were good. I do not know how to build a system myself so this was my best bet for the money at the time. Since I bought it, I have discovered that Home Depot now sells one for $400.00 less that you can add units on too as needed. This one you cannot add more power packs to it, according to the instructions. I followed the instructions and plugged it in to the wall for 3 days ( it was fully charged in less than one day)than ran it dry using a small fan and a table lamp with a 12 watt flourescent bulb in it. I ran the fan for two nights constant and the light just at night for about 4 hours each night. Just those two things ran it dry on power and it had to be recharged. When you plug it in the wall to charge it takes about 6 to 8 hours to fully charge. I did this 3 times like the instructions said, to condition the battery. I have not yet plugged it in to charge using the solar panel. I plan on using other items and marking down the drain time on them so I know what I can run and for how long should the need arise. We just had storms last week and were without power for almost five hours. We had a lamp and a fan going and felt rich. All our neighbors had were candles and flashlights. HMMMMM. So far so good. I like it. PS, I plugged a big box fan in to it on low speed and the fan started making noise. Went back to my 8" fan and all was fine. Even ran it on high speed. See all 4 customer reviews...

This is a very simple plug n play solar generator. It comes with a brand new duracell powerpack 600 and a brand new solar panel that simple plugs into the batterypack. This makes it easy to use anywhere for anything. The solar panel has 9ft of wire so you can put the panel in the sun and the battery were you need it. Works great for remote areas without grid power, emergencies, or camping. This kit does not need a seperate charge controller because the battery automatically turns to trickle charge when the batteries are full. No orders to Alaska or Hawaii

Useful, But Does Not Perform Up To Specifications By Scott If the Xantrex Xpower Powerpack Solar lived up to its specifications, I would rate it 5 stars and consider it well worth the money. That's why I bought it in the first place. Unfortunately, its performance falls short of the manufacturer's claims. The overall design of the product is very nice. I had considered building something similar based on a how-to article in Popular Science, but the Powerpack is so nicely packaged for only a couple dollars more, I chose to buy it. The Powerpack disappoints in the amount of energy stored in its battery that is available to power other electronic devices. The battery is specified as 12 volts and 10 amp-hours. As such, I was expecting to get as much as 120 watt-hours from it, but I barely get half that. As a test, I fully charged the battery using the included AC adapter. By "fully", I mean the unit claimed to be charged. I then ran the built-in LED lights. The manual claims they should run for 48 hours. They ran 27.5 hours for me. I assumed this performance reflected a bad unit and exchanged it. The new unit performs similarly. Either the battery in the unit performs poorly, or the electronics to monitor and control the battery state-of-charge are weak. As another example of the poor performance, I charged the unit completely (again based on its built-in indicator that charging is done). It indicated 100 percent charge when I turned on the AC or DC output, but as soon as I plugged in any load, it almost immediately dropped to 70 or even 60 percent. Soon after the unit's indicator dropped to 40 percent, the unit shut itself down. So, on the one hand, this is a nice unit to carry around, and it does slowly-but-surely charge the internal battery using the included 5 watt solar panel. It does a fine job charging cell phones and iPods, and a barely acceptable job charging a notebook computer. Compared to its specifications, and for that matter my previous experience with the Xantrex Powerpack Mobile Mini, however, the product is a disappointment. 187 of 189 people found the following review helpful. Gabrielli The product information should include these crucial tidbids, which you only find out AFTER buying (by reading the detailed owner's manual): 1) you cannot use it while you are charging it, and 2)if you want to charge it using the sun, it takes 45 HOURS (YES -- that's HOURS). I used it at an outdoor festival to power a laptop, and -- even thought the manual estimated it would last for up to 4 hours, it pooped out after 1.5 hours. After that, I unplugged and charged it in the sun for a while. It got a lot of interest from people at the festival, who thought it was cool. I think it's cool too. Design nightmare By Snorkboy Many Cons - Battery not "user replaceable" (User manual recommends throwing the whole powerpack out when the battery can no longer take a charge) - If you do take the unit apart to replace the battery, it is an uncommon type not available at battery specialists. - Solar panel is too small to adequately charge the unit. Useful only as a top-up charger. - My unit has locked up twice, where the buttons and display do not work and you need to take it apart to disconnect then reconnect the battery to reboot the internal microcontroller. - Very difficult to take apart (to reboot the unit or change the battery). - AC power adapter puts out too much voltage, causing the unit to complain about an overvoltage situation when it is left plugged in when fully charged. - Loses its charge quickly when not plugged in. - LED lights on both sides of the unit are wired to come on at the same time. No switch to disconnect one bank to double the runtime as a light source. As a warning, if you do have one, do not leave it off its charger

Panels are great, the rest of the kit is mediocre By Joe Cooper I bought this kit for installation on the roof of my motorhome. Delivery was delayed, and then rescheduled a couple of times, so delivery was problematic; but everything arrived in good condition. In short, I've been ecstatic about the PV panels, and kinda "meh" about everything else. So, let's talk about the good: The panels are fantastic. Well-made, long warranty, and they consistently produce more than the advertised power when in direct sunlight (12 amps is not unheard of, according to the charge controller display; though that's only for a few minutes each day...it mostly hovers between 6 and 10 during the peak sun hours of the day). I won't hesitate to buy more Sharp solar panels when it comes time to expand my array. The rest of the kit, however, leaves something to be desired. The worst aspect of the kit is the lack of documentation. The solar panels have documentation, but it covers mounting on permanent structures, and with brackets wholly unlike the ones provided in the kit. The wiring examples in the solar panel documentation also has no relation to how this kit would be wired up on a motorhome or boat. The charge controller also has a little booklet, but there's nothing about mounting the panels or wiring them up on a motorhome or boat. So, you're kinda on your own when it comes to bolting them down and wiring them up; it's not rocket science, but it's not obvious either. I sent an email to Sunforce asking a couple of questions I had about the installation, and got no reply. The Sunforce inverter is cheaply made. While it works, it is noisy and gets quite warm. The fan has also started making yucky noises in the 4 months I've used it. I bought a 1000W Wagan inverter recently, and it is quieter and cooler. Even before the fan started making noise, the inverter itself had a high pitched hum. The provided DC meter is less than worthless. I couldn't see the indicator lights when the sun was bright enough to check the solar panels. Luckily, I have a nice DMM, so I just tossed the provided DC meter. There are DMMs for less than ten bucks on Amazon that I'm sure are better than this volt meter. The cable provided is lighter gauge than the documentation suggests you use for runs of this length, and it only covers the run from the panels to the controller; and not the run from the controller to the battery bank. So, you're on your own there. The mounting brackets had a couple of unthreaded nuts, which was inconvenient and a time-waster. So QC during the packaging process is kinda lax. The charge controller is the only Sunforce-branded component in this kit that I actually like. It's small, it's cheap, and it does the job reliably and with reasonable indicator lights and display. It doesn't run hot, doesn't make noise, and looks good stuck in the wall of my motorhome. I have no complaints about it. So, to sum up: Great solar panels, decent charge controller, but this kit is over-priced at the full-price. I paid about $850, which was about the same price as the two panels by themselves at the time, so a pretty good deal. These days, with the price being back up $1000, you'd be much better off buying the panels independently, and using the remaining $200 to buy a high quality charge controller (the Sunforce one works fine; you can get it for about 30 bucks, I think), good heavy gauge stranded copper wire, a good inverter, and higher quality brackets (hopefully with documentation that covers using those brackets). If you don't have a DMM, pick one up. You'll spend about the same amount, and end up with a much better installation when you're finished...and with nice thick wire, you can add more panels later without having to run more wire, which is not something I can say for my installation. 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I have learned the key to success though, is the unit must remain on the charger when stored. They clearly warn you to charge at least monthly. Great Battery By MAW This is a great product. Do yourself a favor, don't bother with the included charger. Buy a BatteryMinder desulphating conditioning charger with a cigerette adapter. You can leave it plugged in continuously and the battery will be maintained in peak condition. Also, the "hum" mentioned by another reviewer is the cooling fan for the inverter which comes on during high loads. _____________ Update: I've been using this battery to run astronomy equipment regularly for the last year - primarily via 12 volt plug. I've charged it exclusively with the BatteryMinder and it's always 13.6 volts when I disconnect it for use. No complaints with the battery.
